Funeral Home Prices FAQ for October 2026: Source-Checked Answers to Common Questions

This FAQ answers common questions about funeral-home prices for October 2026 with source-checked rights, medians, and aid limits. Use it to compare funeral-home charges, skip unneeded items, and plan your next call. A General Price List (GPL) is the funeral home's written, itemized list of offered goods and services with prices. The Federal Trade Commission requires funeral homes to give it to anyone who asks in person about arrangements to keep, as explained in FTC Funeral Rule compliance guidance.

What price lists must you receive?

Ask in person about arrangements and you must receive the GPL to keep. If you call about offerings or prices, staff must give accurate price information. The Federal Trade Commission says telephone shoppers can compare without visiting first.

Ask to see caskets and you must see a Casket Price List before viewing them. Ask about vaults or liners and you must see an Outer Burial Container Price List before viewing them. Federal Trade Commission rules require this show-before-you-see order.

  • Take the GPL home each time you visit a home in person.
  • Call first for item prices, then compare the same items.
  • Ask for the casket list before viewing caskets and the vault list before viewing vaults.

Do you have to buy a package?

No. You may buy only the funeral goods and services you want. A provider may not condition one purchase on buying another item, such as requiring a casket to get services.

The Federal Trade Commission states this choice right in its Funeral Rule review. Pick viewing time without added preparation you do not want. Use services from one home while supplying a casket from elsewhere if that fits your plan. Say clearly which GPL line items you accept and which you decline.

What is a typical funeral-home bill?

The National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 member price-list study set the national median charge at $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial. The median rose to $9,995 when a vault was included, as reported in the 2023 NFDA General Price List study.

The same study set the median funeral with viewing and cremation at $6,280, including an alternative container and urn. Both medians exclude cemetery, monument, and cash-advance charges. Your out-the-door total runs higher when those outside charges apply.

How do you shop when prices are not online?

The Funeral Rule was written before online shopping and does not require funeral homes to post prices online. The Federal Trade Commission described this gap in its FTC October 2022 online-price notice, so October 2026 shoppers should still request the GPL directly.

Call two or three homes and ask for the same service list. Compare GPL line items side by side before you visit. Keep notes with the home name, date, quoted amount, and included services.

What will VA and Social Security pay?

For deaths on or after Oct. 1, 2026, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs pays up to a $1,032 burial allowance plus $1,032 for a plot.

For a service-connected death it pays up to $2,000, only partly offsetting a funeral bill, according to the VA burial-allowance page. Social Security pays a one-time $255 lump-sum death payment to an eligible surviving spouse or child. The Social Security Administration treats it as a lump sum, not a funeral-cost reimbursement.
