Funeral Costs, Laws and Death Certificates by State

Funeral rules, paperwork costs and official help differ by state. Choose your state on the map or in the list for its guide: death certificate fees and how to order, who has the legal right to arrange the funeral, and where to find help paying.

Funeral cost calculator by state

Choose your state, the kind of arrangement and what it includes. The estimate uses that state’s funeral homes’ own prices where we have enough of them, and shows the source of every line.

Funeral costs by state

No government agency publishes funeral prices by state, so we collect funeral homes’ own published General Price Lists state by state. States with at least 10 lists show real local medians in the table below and in their state guide; the rest are still being collected. The national benchmark is the National Funeral Directors Association’s 2023 median: $8,300 for a funeral with viewing and burial, $6,280 with viewing and cremation. See the line-by-line breakdown.

Death certificate fees and cremation prices by state

The state fee for the first certified copy comes from each state’s vital records office. The direct cremation median is the lowest direct cremation price listed on each funeral home’s own published General Price List, shown only where we have at least 10 lists; other states are still being collected.
